or maybe you haven't installed all the necessary drivers for your pc. like video driver or whatever them IT people call it. i have the same problem before when  mah dad reformatted the laptop.

For windows 7.
Click Start -> Type "dxdiag" (Without quotation) -> Display Tab. It must be like that.

For windows XP
Click Start -> run -> Type "dxdiag" -> display tab.
